Another Castle
Oni Press
Art: Paulina Ganucheau
Script: Andrew Wheeler
As in “your princess is in…”, Another Castle subverts one of my favorite tropes to break down: the princess who needs rescuing. When Princess Misty gets captured, she isn’t just about saving herself, or her own kingdom, but the kingdom under the rule of her captor. The best thing about Misty? She doesn’t feel like she has to choose between being pretty and being tough — she’s always ready to jump into action, even in her best dress.

Jonesy
BOOM! Comics
Art: Caitlin Rose Boyle
Script: Sam Humphries
She loves One Direction and Tumblr just as much as you do, but she has the magic powers of the mythical Cupid. Jonesy is what would happen if your powers of shipping every cute couple you see became an actual superpower…which could be pretty scary, but this book is pure cute! We’re so ready to check it out, with its super cute art by Caitlin Rose Boyle…But oh man, can you imagine the power of shipping wars?

Goldie Vance
BOOM! Comics
Art: Brittany Williams
Script: Hope Larson
There are few things that give us more joy than a good girl-detective story. In the great tradition of Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy comes Goldie Vance, whose detective smarts are the natural progression of her fascination in seeing how things work. Her engineering brain is always searching for the missing piece, making her perfect for solving mysteries with her crew of friends. If you don’t already love Brittany Williams’ art from her work on Marvel’s Hellcat, you’re in for a treat with her bright, cartoony designs!

Octopus Pie
Image Comics
Art and script: Meredith Gran
Originally published as a webcomic, internet-favorite Octopus Pie is finally being collected in print, perfect for reading outside when the weather warms up. Following the daily frustrations of Everest “Eve” Ning, and beginning with a hilariously bad breakup, Octopus Pie takes relatability to a whole new level. One of the best things about web-comics is the speed with which they move along, and Octopus Pie’s no different, with laughs on every single page.

Switch, Vol. 1
Image Comics
Art and script: Stjepan Sejic
For over two decades, Witchblade was an iconic part of the comics landscape, with an anime, a television series, and always the same hero. With this reinvention, the Witchblade, that immortal artifact that balances the powers of light and darkness finds itself on the unlikely hand of a teenage girl. Switch’s (get the title now?) main character is great: more than just a generic ‘young girl,’ Mary’s a true weirdo, obsessed with UFOs, and uniquely equipped to deal with her new haunted gauntlet.

Breaker
Stela iOS app
Art: Kelly and Nichole Matthews
Script: Mariah Huehner
While most of these can be ordered from your local comic store, or delivered via Amazon, Breaker is part of the launch of new, comics-based mobile app Stela. It looks like Stela will work similar to Hulu or Netflix - pay a monthly fee to read issues of comics as they come out.
The story of SoCal chick and occasional weekend monster Verity Monroe, Breaker is the perfect comic to fill the True Blood-shaped hole in your heart. Best of all? You’ll get your fix each and every weekday, delivered right to your iPhone.
